20 Killed, +450 Wounded in Second Devices Blasts in Lebanon

A second wave of electronic devices blasts in Lebanon has resulted in the deaths of 20 people and the injury of more than 450, according to reports by the Lebanese Health Ministry on Tuesday Sep. 18th, 2024

State media reports indicated that communications devices, including smartphones, laptops and walkie-talkies, utilized by Hezbollah members detonated in Beirut, with similar explosions recorded in the southern and eastern regions of the country.

On Tuesday, explosions in pagers used by Lebanon’s Hezbollah group killed 12 people, including civilians, and wounded nearly 3,000, about 200 critically.

Lebanon Civil Defence said its teams have extinguished at least 60 fires across the country’s southern governorate of Nabatieh, which erupted as a result of the devices blasts.

Fires broke out in residential homes and local businesses, as well as in vehicles and motorbikes “as a result of the explosion of wireless devices”, the Civil Defence revealed.

The organization also added that it has responded with 30 ambulance teams to explosions “in different areas, including the South of Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley”, saying in a post on X that the Lebanese Red Cross also said more teams are “on high alert and ready to intervene”.

The two-day blasts in Lebanon are expected to intensify fears of an impending all-out conflict in the Middle East.

Hamas has blamed Israel for the new wave of electronic device explosions in Lebanon, saying it “now threatens the security and stability of the region”.

Senior Hamas official Izzat Al-Rishq said the Israeli government was responsible for the repercussions of “this continuous attack on Lebanon” after communication devices used by Hezbollah detonated across Lebanon’s south and in Beirut’s suburbs.

Al-Rishq said in a statement the “assault” is a violation against Lebanon’s land, its leadership, and its people. The international community is legally obliged to put an end to Israel’s actions, he added.

“We reiterate our utmost support for Hezbollah, the Lebanese resistance, and the people of Lebanon,” Al-Rishq said.
