Days of Palestine – Hebron

The family of activist and political candidate Nizar Banat, who was assassinated by the Palestinian authorities, announced its official demands following his funeral this afternoon in Hebron.

In a statement, the family demanded that the 27 soldiers involved in the assassination be arrested by the Military Intelligence and given a public trial.

They held direct responsibility for the assassination of Banat of the deputy head of the Preventive Security Service in Hebron, Maher Abu Halawa.

They said: “The order to kill under the pretext of arrest was prepared in his office, and this man issued the decision.”

The family also demanded “the dismissal of Hebron’s governor, Jibril al-Bakri, and transfer him to an investigation committee, and the necessary legal measures to be taken against him as a result of his prior knowledge of the assassination.

They demanded the formation of a civil investigation committee composed of notables from the Hebron and Palestine clans and the national and Islamic forces, with the participation of local and international human rights organizations, to determine the circumstances of the assassination, stressing that “the family has no confidence in the government and its paper committees.

The family affirmed its support for the institutions of the Human Rights Commission and the Foundation for the Right to investigate, which they are conducting independently, and that it awaits the findings of the facts.

Tens of thousands of citizens from the West Bank participated in the funeral of the martyr Nizar Banat after Friday prayers at the Mosque of the Wills of the Messenger of God in the southern region of Hebron.

A joint security force from the General Intelligence and Preventive Security services of the authority in Ramallah assassinated the opponent activist Nizar Banat, after storming the house in which he was, as he was severely beaten with rough tools, over a period of several hours, before his lifeless body was transferred to a hospital.

The incident of the assassination of Banat led to a wave of anger in the Palestinian street, in addition to reactions and condemnations from human rights and international institutions, as well as the European Union, America, Britain, Canada and the United Nations, amid calls for the necessity of investigating the circumstances of the incident and bringing the perpetrators to trial.
