On Tuseday, Jone 11th, 2024, Egypt and Qatar announced that they have received a response from Hamas and the Palestinian factions regarding the ceasefire proposal.
Both sides affirmed that their joint mediation efforts with the United States are ongoing until an agreement is reached. The meditators are studying Hamas response and will coordinate with all parties regarding the next steps.
Washington welcomed Hamas accepting of a US-drafted UN Security Council resolution that backs a ceasefire deal in Gaza, describing it as a “hopeful sign”.
Reuters reported that Hamas’s response to the ceasefire proposal includes a timeline for a permanent ceasefire and the withdrawal of the Israeli army from Gaza, including Rafah.
Hamas movement said in a statement Monday that it expressed “readiness” to implement its principles through indirect talks with ‘Israel’ following the vote that it “welcomed” the resolution.
Hamas added that the resolution was “consistent with the demands of our people and resistance,” including a permanent cassation to Israel’s war on Gaza, a complete withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Gaza enclave and a good prisoner exchange deal.
Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri further added that the group backed the resolution proposed by US President Joe Biden and was ready to negotiate over the details.
“It was up to the US to make sure ‘Israel’ abides by the deal. The US administration is facing a real test to carry out its commitments in compelling the occupation to immediately end the war in an implementation of the UN Security Council resolution,” he concluded.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said conversations on plans for Gaza after the war ends would continue on Tuesday afternoon and in the next couple of days.
He added that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “reaffirmed his commitment” to a Gaza ceasefire deal during their meeting in Jerusalem.
